About business car finance
Business car finance in Ireland is company car finance: the limited company is the borrower and owns or leases the car, which it provides to directors or staff. It is not for cars a director buys personally, which is consumer finance that Welcome Finance cannot help with. Car finance for a limited company is usually hire purchase, a finance lease or contract hire, often called a company car lease.
Cars are taxed much less favourably than vans. Most companies can reclaim little or no VAT on a car, capital allowances are capped at €24,000 and scaled by CO2, and anyone using the car privately pays BIK. An electric company car can reduce BIK significantly in 2026. Our guide to commercial vehicle finance, VAT, capital allowances and BIK compares cars and vans in depth.

Choose the car
Share the dealer quote, with the CO2 figure and list price.
- 2
Check the tax
Ask your accountant about VAT, capital allowances and BIK for that car.
- 3
Compare offers
HP, lease or contract hire: rate, term, balloon and mileage side by side.
- 4
Take delivery
The car is registered to the company and the lender pays the dealer.
Types of business car finance
Hire purchase
The company owns the car at the end and claims capital allowances within the limits.
Finance lease
The company rents the car; lease payments are restricted for tax in the same way as allowances.
Contract hire
A company car lease with a fixed mileage, often with maintenance; the car goes back at the end.
Business PCP
Mainly a consumer product; a few lenders offer business versions with a guaranteed final value.
Typical eligibility
Every lender sets its own criteria. These are common starting points. We’ll tell you which lenders are likely to consider your business.
- Irish limited company as borrower and registered owner
- Dealer quote for the car
- Accounts and bank statements that support repayments

What you’ll usually need
- Dealer quote or invoice
- Latest accounts
- 6 months of business bank statements

Advantages
- Spreads the cost of company cars
- Lower BIK on electric cars in 2026
- Contract hire can fix running costs
Things to consider
- Little or no VAT is reclaimable on most cars
- Capital allowances are capped and cut for higher emissions
- BIK applies to private use
Rates, fees and costs
Costs depend on the car, its expected value at the end, the term, the deposit and your company's accounts. On contract hire, the mileage limit and any excess mileage charge matter as much as the monthly rental. Ask each lender for the APR or total rentals, and all fees, in writing.
We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.
Example (for illustration only): a company takes a car on contract hire for 3 years, with an agreed mileage. If a lessor’s offer showed 36 monthly rentals of €600, the rentals would total €21,600, plus any excess mileage charge. At the end, the car goes back to the lessor. The real cost depends on the offer, and finance is subject to status and the provider’s approval.
The car is the lender's security and can be repossessed if payments are missed. Directors may be asked for a personal guarantee and should take independent legal advice before signing one. If your company reclaims VAT on a qualifying car and sells it, or business use falls below 60%, within two years, some of the VAT is clawed back. Tax treatment depends on the car and your company; check with your accountant.
Finance is subject to status and the lender’s approval. Welcome Finance is a commercial finance broker, not a lender. We arrange finance for limited companies for business purposes only; this is not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

How we work
Business car finance: frequently asked questions
Can a limited company finance a car?
Yes. A limited company can finance a car on hire purchase, a finance lease or contract hire, with the company as the borrower and the car registered in its name. Lenders look at your accounts and bank statements and may ask a director for a personal guarantee. If a director buys a car personally, that is consumer finance, which Welcome Finance cannot help with.
Why can't my company reclaim all the VAT on a car?
Because Irish VAT law blocks deduction on most passenger cars. The main relief allows 20% of the VAT on a qualifying car: first registered from 2021 with CO2 below 140g/km and used at least 60% for business. On a lease, 20% of the VAT on each monthly charge can be deducted under the same conditions. Motor dealers and car-hire businesses have their own rules.
Is a company car lease better than buying?
It depends on the car, the mileage and your tax position. Buying on hire purchase gives the company the car at the end and capital allowances within the limits. A finance lease or contract hire spreads the cost, and contract hire can fix maintenance costs but sets mileage limits. Lease payments on cars are restricted for tax in a similar way to capital allowances.
What capital allowances can my company claim on a car?
Allowances are 12.5% a year over eight years, on a cost capped at €24,000 and scaled by CO2. For cars bought before 2027, cars up to 140g/km get allowances on the full €24,000, cars over 140g/km up to 155g/km on the lower of €12,000 or half the cost, and cars above 155g/km get none. From 1 January 2027, the full amount applies only up to 120g/km.
How is BIK worked out on a company car in 2026?
BIK is a percentage of the car's original market value, after a €10,000 reduction for most cars. The rate depends on CO2 and business mileage. Up to 26,000 business kilometres, it runs from 15% for a zero-emission car to 37.5% for cars over 179g/km, and it falls in steps as business mileage rises. The employer collects the tax through payroll.
Is an electric company car better for BIK?
In 2026, usually yes. Electric cars get the 15% rate at low business mileage and an extra €20,000 reduction in their original market value on top of the €10,000 general reduction. Revenue says the extra electric reduction falls to €10,000 in 2027 and ends in 2028, when the general reduction falls to €2,500. BIK on an electric car will therefore rise over the next two years.
Can my company get an SEAI grant on an electric car?
Not usually. SEAI's car grant is for privately bought cars, which must stay registered as private for six months, and its table shows no commercial grant for passenger cars. Companies still benefit from VRT relief of up to €5,000 on electric cars, which Budget 2027 extended to the end of 2028, and the price limits apply. Electric vans bought by companies can get an SEAI grant.
Can my company get PCP finance on a car?
Sometimes, but PCP is mainly sold to consumers. A few lenders offer business versions, with lower monthly payments and a guaranteed final value you can pay, hand back or trade in. For companies, hire purchase, finance leases and contract hire are more common. Compare the total cost, the mileage limit and the final payment before choosing.
Can an electric company car get the Accelerated Capital Allowance?
Possibly. Revenue's energy-efficient equipment scheme includes electric and alternative fuel vehicles, giving a 100% first-year allowance on vehicles your company owns, but for cars it is based on the lower of the actual cost or €24,000. Leased cars do not qualify, and a car can use only one allowance scheme. Your accountant can confirm whether a specific model qualifies.
Does Welcome Finance arrange business car finance?
Possibly. Car dealers often have finance partners, and banks and leasing companies lend directly. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.
