Overview
Doing business in Galway
Business loans in Galway often fund growth in a city built around medical technology. The University of Galway says eight of the world’s top ten medtech companies operate here, with about 15,000 people working in the sector locally. Toolmakers, validation engineers, software houses and logistics firms grow alongside them, and that growth usually needs cash before invoices are paid.

Galway’s other engine is tourism and hospitality, from Salthill to Eyre Square, where takings peak in summer while rent and wages run all year. We help trading Galway limited companies find out whether our panel can consider working capital, a merchant cash advance or stock finance. Welcome Finance has no Galway office; we work with Galway and west of Ireland limited companies by phone and online.

Why is Galway known as a medtech hub?
According to the University of Galway’s BioInnovate programme, the city hosts eight of the world’s ten largest medtech companies, including Medtronic, Boston Scientific and Abbott, alongside a steady stream of start-ups. Around 15,000 people work in medtech in Galway, out of more than 45,000 in the sector nationally. The University of Galway and the Atlantic Technological University’s Galway campus train many of the engineers and scientists the sector hires.
For smaller suppliers, medtech work brings strict quality systems, long qualification periods and customers who pay on 60 or 90 days. A company may need to hire, buy materials and hold stock for months before revenue from a new contract arrives.
What will the Port of Galway expansion change?
In April 2026 An Coimisiún Pleanála granted permission, with conditions, for the Port of Galway extension, estimated at €290 million, on the same day as approval for the Galway ring road. The port handled about 386,000 tonnes of goods in 2025 (CSO), small beside Dublin or Cork, but the project should support port activity and free up the inner harbour for redevelopment over time.
Where do business loans in Galway usually go?
Hospitality and retail companies borrow to cover the quiet months or a refurbishment; tech companies sometimes bridge the wait for an R&D tax credit, explained in our R&D tax credit funding guide. PorterShed, the city’s tech hub, says more than 835 jobs have been created by its members since it began, many in young software companies that are growing fast. Established companies headquartered in the west can also look at the Western Development Commission’s loan fund, which usually lends €50,000 to €300,000 and can sit alongside a smaller working capital facility from a non-bank lender.

How we work
Business loans in Galway: FAQs
What is the Western Development Commission’s loan fund and can a Galway company use it?
It is a loan fund run by the Western Development Commission for companies registered, headquartered and controlled in Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon or Sligo. More than half of the promoters and management must live in the region. Loans usually range from €50,000 to €300,000 over three to ten years, at the EU reference rate plus a risk margin.
Does Galway City Council give grants for shopfronts?
Yes. Its €275,000 Shopfront Enhancement Scheme 2026 offered grants of up to €20,000, covering 50% to 75% of eligible costs, to street-facing businesses in Salthill and the City Core, Lower Dominick Street and Eyre Square conservation areas. Neighbouring businesses applying together could get extra support. The 2026 round closed on 30 June, so watch for the next one.
What grants does LEO Galway offer an established company?
Companies trading for more than 18 months can apply for a Business Expansion Grant, capped at 50% of eligible costs or €150,000, whichever is lower. Grants linked to jobs are capped at €15,000 per full-time job created. A company that received a Priming Grant generally waits 18 months after its final drawdown before applying. Feasibility grants help test a new product or market.
Can a Galway medtech supplier borrow to buy new equipment?
Equipment is usually funded through hire purchase or leasing. Tell us what your company needs and we will tell you whether a lender on our panel may consider it. If the real pressure is wages and materials while a new contract ramps up, a working capital or unsecured business loan from our panel may be worth looking at. Lenders will ask for accounts and recent bank statements.
Where is Enterprise Ireland’s office in Galway?
Enterprise Ireland’s West office is in Mervue Business Park, Mervue, Galway. It works with manufacturing and internationally traded services companies with export plans, which in Galway includes many medtech suppliers and software firms. Smaller companies usually start with LEO Galway, which can refer them to Enterprise Ireland once they are ready to scale abroad.
Will the Port of Galway expansion create work for local companies?
Permission was granted in April 2026 for an extension estimated at €290 million, so construction, marine engineering and haulage firms may see tenders once the project moves to procurement. Watch the Port of Galway’s own announcements for the timetable. If you plan to bid, check the payment terms and conditions the contract sets before committing.
How do Galway hospitality businesses cover the winter months?
Many plan for it: they build a cash reserve in summer and agree supplier terms that ease off in winter. Where that isn’t enough, a short-term working capital loan or a merchant cash advance, repaid as a share of card takings, may help. Both are products our panel can consider. A cash advance costs more when trade is slow, so compare the total cost.
