Overview
How finance helps technology and software businesses
Tech company finance in Ireland has to fit a business model where costs come before revenue. Software and SaaS companies pay salaries long before recurring revenue builds, and the R&D tax credit arrives in instalments. Debt can extend runway, as long as the company can repay it from cash flow.

The R&D tax credit rose from 30% to 35%, generally for accounting periods ending on or after 31 December 2026, and the first instalment is the greater of €87,500 and 50% of the claim (Revenue). Budget 2027 proposes raising that threshold to €105,000, subject to the Finance Bill. Our guide to R&D tax credit funding explains how the instalments work.
We help tech and software limited companies with revenue-based finance and working capital, and explain the options for grant and R&D tax credit funding and equipment. Our guide to revenue-based finance in Ireland covers costs and SaaS examples.

How we work
Technology and software finance: FAQs
Can a SaaS company borrow against its recurring revenue?
Yes, through revenue-based finance, where a lender advances funds based on your recurring revenue and you repay a share of future revenue. Lenders often connect to your billing, accounting and bank data, and look at churn, growth and gross margin. It suits trading companies with predictable subscription income. Revenue-based finance is among the products our lender panel covers, subject to each lender's criteria.
Our R&D tax credit is paid over three years. How do tech companies fund the wait?
For accounting periods ending on or after 31 December 2026, the credit is generally 35% of qualifying spend. The first instalment is the greater of €87,500 (or the full credit, if lower) and 50% of the credit; the rest is paid over two more years. Some specialist lenders advance against claims, while others prefer an unsecured working capital loan. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.
What did Budget 2027 change for the R&D tax credit?
Budget 2027 proposes raising the first-instalment threshold from €87,500 to €105,000, so more of a smaller company's claim would be paid in year one, and increasing subcontracting limits. These changes need the Finance Bill to pass, so check the final rules and start dates with your accountant before you plan funding around them. Our post on the 35% R&D tax credit covers the 2026 changes.
Will lenders see our accounting losses as a problem?
Possibly. Many software companies report losses while they spend on growth. Lenders then look harder at recurring revenue, churn and cash runway, and ask how long your cash lasts without new funding and how repayments will be met. Up-to-date management accounts and a realistic forecast make a real difference to how your application is read.
Can we fund annual software licences and cloud costs?
These are operating costs, so they are usually covered by working capital rather than asset finance, which normally needs a physical asset. Some IT leasing providers can bundle software with hardware. A working capital or short-term loan can spread a large annual licence or cloud commitment that has to be paid upfront. Working capital loans are among the products our lender panel covers.
