About short-term business loans

Short-term business loans in Ireland are repaid within a year, often over 6 or 12 months in weekly or monthly instalments. They suit a defined need with a clear source of repayment, such as a large order that pays in 60 days, discounted stock or an urgent repair.

Looking for fast business loans? Some Irish lenders say they can make a credit decision within 24 hours of a complete application, with funds following once the agreement is signed and identity checks are done. That is a lender's stated aim, not a promise, and a same-day business loan is the exception. The quickest applications are complete ones; see how long a business loan takes.

Short-term lenders often size the loan against monthly income and ask for a tax clearance certificate and several months of trading. Short-term business loans are one of the products our lender panel may be able to help with. Card-heavy businesses can also compare a merchant cash advance.

Typical eligibility

Every lender sets its own criteria. These are common starting points. We’ll tell you which lenders are likely to consider your business.

  • Irish limited company
  • Usually 6 to 12 months of trading
  • Regular income through a business bank account; some lenders set a monthly minimum
  • A tax clearance certificate for many lenders

What you’ll usually need

  • 3 to 6 months of business bank statements
  • Tax clearance certificate
  • Director ID and proof of address
  • Details of existing borrowing
Full document checklist

Advantages

  • Decisions can be quick with a complete application
  • Less total interest because the term is short
  • No long-term commitment

Things to consider

  • High repayments relative to the amount
  • The annualised cost can be high
  • Repeated short-term borrowing can strain cash flow

Rates, fees and costs

Short-term lenders may quote interest, a fixed fee, or both. A modest fee over a few months can equal a high annual rate, so short-term business loans are usually dearer per year than longer loans even when the total cost is lower. Where a lender offers, you see the total amount repayable and the repayment schedule before you decide. Our rate converter turns a flat rate into an annual rate.

We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.

Example (for illustration only): a company borrows €40,000 over 6 months for a large order that its customer will pay for later. If a lender’s offer showed a total repayable of €44,000, the repayments would be 26 weekly payments of about €1,692. The real cost depends on the lender’s offer, and finance is subject to status and lender approval.

A short-term loan can cost more for each month you have the money than a longer loan, and repayments are larger because the term is short, so make sure the company has a clear way to repay within the term. Missed repayments can lead to recovery action, damage to the company's credit record and calls on any personal guarantee, so a director's own assets could be at risk. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee.

Short-term business loans: frequently asked questions

What is a short-term business loan?

A loan your company repays within 12 months, often in weekly or monthly instalments. It suits a defined, temporary need with a clear source of repayment, such as a large order that pays in 60 days, a bulk stock buy at a discount or an urgent repair. It is not designed for long-term projects, which is usually cheaper to spread over a longer term.

How much can my company borrow for a few months?

Short-term lenders often size the loan against your monthly income, so the repayments fit within the term. They look at three to six months of bank statements, regular takings and existing commitments. If the amount you need would take more than a year to repay comfortably, a longer loan or a different product is usually a better fit.

Should I choose a 6 month or a 12 month business loan?

Pick the shortest term your company can comfortably repay from expected income. A 6 month business loan costs less in total but has higher instalments; a 12 month business loan spreads the cost and eases cash flow but usually costs more overall. If repaying within a year would strain the business, a longer loan or a different product is likely to suit better.

Are short-term business loans expensive?

Usually, when measured as an annual rate, because lenders charge more for speed and short commitments. The total cost can still be lower than a longer loan, because you pay for fewer months. Short-term lenders may quote interest, a fixed fee or both, so compare the total amount repayable and the repayment schedule rather than the headline figure.

How quickly can I get a business loan in Ireland?

Some lenders say they can decide within 24 hours of a complete application, but this is not guaranteed, and same-day funding is rare. The money arrives only after the agreement is signed and identity checks are complete. Bank loans and larger amounts usually take longer. Having recent bank statements, director ID and details of existing borrowing ready makes the biggest difference to timing.

Do short-term lenders ask for a personal guarantee?

Many do, even for small amounts and short terms. The guarantee usually lasts until the loan is repaid in full, so a missed final payment can still lead to a demand on the director. Ask the lender whether the guarantee is capped and what it covers, and get independent legal advice before signing.

Can I take a second short-term loan to repay the first?

Some lenders will top up or renew a loan, but repeated short-term borrowing can strain cash flow and become expensive, because fees are charged each time. If your company keeps needing short-term funds, it may need longer-term finance, or a closer look at its cash cycle with your accountant.

What happens if my company misses a repayment on a short-term loan?

Contact the lender straight away. Short-term loans have tight schedules, so a missed payment can quickly trigger default fees, extra interest and recovery action. Lenders that report to the Central Credit Register will record arrears, and a lender holding a director's guarantee can call on it. Regulated lenders must follow set procedures for SMEs in arrears.

Can a company trading less than a year get a short-term loan?

Sometimes. Many short-term lenders want 6 to 12 months of trading with steady income through a business bank account, and some will look at 6 to 9 months if takings are regular. Start-ups registered as limited companies in Ireland can also apply through Welcome Finance, although options may be fewer. The Local Enterprise Office and Microfinance Ireland are other places to look.
