About selective invoice finance

Selective invoice finance, also called spot factoring or single invoice finance, lets your company fund individual invoices, or invoices to chosen customers, without tying the whole sales ledger into a facility.

It suits companies that only occasionally need cash early, such as after landing a large contract. The cost per invoice is usually higher than a whole-ledger facility, but you only pay when you use it. A selected debtor facility works like selective invoice discounting: ongoing funding against named customers only.

What it’s used for

  • Funding a large one-off contract
  • Covering a seasonal peak
  • Bridging one slow payer

Who it’s for

  • Companies with occasional large invoices
  • Companies that do not want a long-term facility
  • Businesses with one slow-paying major customer

Rates, fees and costs

Charges are usually a fee per invoice, based on the amount and how long it is outstanding, and sometimes a set-up fee. Ask the provider for the total cost of funding each invoice in euro before you proceed. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.

We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.

Example (for illustration only): a company funds just one €40,000 invoice to a large customer, due in 60 days. If the provider’s offer advanced 80% of the invoice, the company could draw €32,000 soon after raising it. When the customer pays the €40,000, the provider takes back its €32,000 and its charges, say €900 if that is what the offer showed, and the remaining €7,100 goes to the company. The real cost depends on the provider’s offer, and finance is subject to status and the provider’s approval.

If your customer does not pay, your company usually has to repay the advance, and the fees on that invoice are still due. Providers may take a charge over company assets or ask for a director guarantee, which may be at risk if the advance is not repaid. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee. Check whether the customer will be notified and any minimum invoice size.

Selective invoice finance: frequently asked questions

Can I finance just one invoice?

Yes. Selective invoice finance funds a single invoice, or invoices to chosen customers, instead of your whole sales ledger. You choose when to use it; the provider checks the customer’s credit, advances an agreed share of the invoice, and pays the balance less fees when the customer settles. There is usually no long contract.

What is spot factoring?

Spot factoring is another name for selective invoice finance: a one-off advance against a single invoice. The provider usually notifies the customer and collects that invoice, much like factoring, but only for the invoice you choose. It is useful for occasional large invoices, but dearer per invoice than a whole-ledger facility.

Is there a long contract with selective invoice finance?

Usually not, or only a short one. That is the main appeal: there is no whole-ledger commitment or minimum term of the kind found in factoring and discounting. Check whether there is a set-up fee, a minimum number of invoices or a minimum monthly charge, as these can make occasional use dearer than it looks.

Is selective invoice finance more expensive than factoring?

Typically yes, per invoice, because the provider takes on single transactions and does more work each time. But you only pay when you use it. For a company that needs early payment a few times a year, the total cost can still be lower than running a full facility. Compare the cost of funding each invoice in euro.

What is selective invoice discounting?

A selected debtor facility that funds invoices to named customers only, while your company keeps collecting. It sits between spot factoring and a full discounting facility: you are not tied to the whole ledger, but you get ongoing funding against chosen accounts. Ask whether customers will be notified and what minimum volume applies.

Is there a minimum invoice size?

It varies by provider. Some only fund invoices above a set value, because each invoice involves credit checks and paperwork, and small invoices can cost proportionately more to fund. Ask the provider for its minimum invoice size and any minimum fee per invoice before you submit one.

What happens if my customer pays late or not at all?

Usually your company has to repay the advance if the customer does not pay, and fees keep building while the invoice is outstanding, because charges often depend on how long it takes to settle. You can also claim statutory late payment interest from a late business customer.

When is selective invoice finance most useful?

For a large one-off contract, a seasonal peak, or a single slow-paying major customer, where your company needs early payment occasionally rather than all year. If you find yourself funding invoices every month, a whole-ledger invoice factoring or discounting facility is usually cheaper and simpler to run.

What documents does a selective invoice finance provider need?

Usually the invoice itself, the contract or purchase order behind it, proof the work is complete or goods delivered, customer details, your latest accounts and director ID. Because the provider relies on one customer paying, it focuses on that customer’s credit strength and whether the invoice could be disputed.
