About business refinance

Business refinance in Ireland means taking out new finance to repay one or more existing business debts. Companies refinance a business loan to lower monthly repayments, combine several loans into one, replace a facility that is ending, or move away from expensive short-term borrowing.

Refinancing is not always cheaper. A longer term can cut monthly repayments but increase the total repaid, and existing lenders may charge for early settlement. Run the numbers with our refinance savings calculator. For the step-by-step on business debt consolidation, see our guide to refinancing and consolidating company debt.

Who lends for business loan refinancing? Your existing bank, other banks, non-bank term lenders and, for equipment and vehicles, asset finance companies through asset refinance. Government-backed SBCI loans under the Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme cannot be used to refinance existing debt.

Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.

How business refinance works

  1. 1

    New lender assesses

The new lender reviews your accounts, bank statements and current borrowing.

  2. 2

    Settlement figures

Each existing lender confirms in writing what it will take to settle.

  3. 3

    Old debts repaid

The new lender usually pays the old lenders directly.

  4. 4

    One new repayment

Your company repays the new facility on its terms.

Types of business refinance

  • Debt consolidation loan

Several debts replaced by one loan.

  • Term extension

A longer term to reduce monthly repayments.

  • Asset refinance

Refinancing, or releasing cash from, equipment and vehicles your company owns. See asset refinance.

Typical eligibility

Every lender sets its own criteria. These are common starting points. We’ll tell you which lenders are likely to consider your business.

  • Irish limited company, usually with 2 years or more of trading
  • Up-to-date repayments on current borrowing, for most lenders
  • Accounts showing the company can afford the new repayments
  • A tax clearance certificate, for many lenders

What you’ll usually need

  • Latest accounts and management accounts
  • Statements or settlement letters for each existing debt
  • 6 months of business bank statements
  • Director ID and proof of address
Full document checklist

Advantages

  • One repayment instead of several
  • Can lower monthly outgoings
  • May reduce the overall cost if the rate is lower

Things to consider

  • A longer term can increase the total repaid
  • Early-settlement charges may apply
  • Not suitable if the company is already in serious difficulty

Rates, fees and costs

Compare the total cost of your current borrowing, including any early-settlement charges, against each refinance offer; our refinance savings calculator does the sums. If refinancing would cost your company more overall, it is usually better to stay put. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.

We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.

Example (for illustration only): a company owes €60,000 on two loans, with 20 monthly payments of €3,500 left in total, €70,000 in all. If a new lender’s offer showed €60,000 over 3 years with a total repayable of €72,000, the company would pay 36 monthly payments of €2,000 instead. That is a lower monthly figure but €2,000 more in total, before any early settlement charges, so compare both totals before you decide. The real cost depends on the lender’s offer, and finance is subject to status and lender approval.

Extending a term can mean paying more interest overall, and the new lender's fees and any early repayment charges on the old borrowing add to the cost, so compare the total cost before you switch. Any asset or guarantee given as security may be at risk if repayments are not kept up. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee. If your company is struggling to meet repayments, talk to your lenders and accountant first. Regulated lenders in Ireland must follow the Central Bank's SME Lending Regulations for borrowers in arrears or financial difficulty, and the Credit Review Service can review bank decisions on restructuring.

Business refinance: frequently asked questions

Can I refinance a business loan in Ireland?

Yes, if a new lender is willing to repay your existing debt and your company can afford the new repayments. Banks, non-bank term lenders and asset finance companies all refinance business borrowing, each with its own criteria. The new lender usually pays the old lenders directly. Check early-settlement charges first, because they can wipe out the saving.

Is it worth refinancing or consolidating business debt?

Only if the new rate and fees, plus any early-settlement charges on your current debts, cost less over the full term than staying put. A longer term can cut monthly repayments but increase the total you repay. Ask each existing lender for a written settlement figure and compare both options with our refinance savings calculator or your accountant.

Can I consolidate several business debts into one loan?

Yes, some lenders offer consolidation loans that repay several debts and leave one monthly repayment. They will want settlement letters for each debt, recent accounts and bank statements showing the new repayment is affordable. Consolidation makes budgeting easier but is not automatically cheaper. Our debt consolidation guide walks through the process step by step.

Can I refinance a merchant cash advance?

Sometimes. Some lenders will repay an advance with a term loan if trading supports it, which can ease the daily drain on card takings. Check the advance's terms first: many merchant cash advances charge a fixed fee, so settling early may not reduce what you owe unless the provider agrees a discount. Ask for a written settlement figure.

Can I use an SBCI loan to refinance existing debt?

No. The Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme only funds newly originated loans for eligible projects, and refinancing or replacing existing debt is excluded. If your company wants lower-cost long-term funding for a new project, our SBCI page explains how to get an eligibility code and apply directly to a participating lender.

Can I refinance if my company is behind on repayments?

It is much harder, because new lenders look closely at recent arrears. Speak to your current lender first. Regulated lenders must follow the Central Bank's SME Lending Regulations for borrowers in arrears or financial difficulty, which include considering alternative arrangements. Your accountant can also advise on SCARP or examinership if the company is viable but over-borrowed.

Will refinancing affect my company's credit record?

New loans and settled loans are reported to the Central Credit Register by lenders that report to it, and a lender's search for your application leaves an enquiry on the report. Settling old debts in full and on time is recorded, and keeping up the new repayments builds a positive history. The Central Credit Register does not give a credit score; lenders read the report itself.

Can Welcome Finance refinance my company's debts?

Possibly. Your existing bank or an asset finance company is often the right first contact, and your accountant if the company is struggling. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.
