About hire purchase finance
Business hire purchase (HP) lets your company use an asset straight away while paying for it in instalments. The lender owns the asset until the last payment and a small purchase fee are paid, and then ownership passes to your company. Hire purchase for a limited company works for new and used equipment, vans, trucks and machinery, and some lenders offer a balloon payment to lower the monthly cost.
For VAT, Revenue treats HP as a supply of goods when the asset is handed over, so VAT on the full price is due at the start; a VAT-registered company can usually reclaim it, except on most cars. The credit charges themselves are VAT-exempt. Your company can usually claim capital allowances, for plant and machinery at 12.5% a year over 8 years. Our guide to hire purchase vs leasing in Ireland compares the two structures, and our asset finance calculator lets you test repayments and balloon options.

Rates, fees and costs
You pay interest or a finance charge over the term, plus documentation and purchase fees. Published examples from Irish banks include documentation fees of around €60 to €120 and purchase fees of about €13 to €63. Hire purchase rates are often quoted as a flat rate, which looks lower than the APR for the same deal, so ask each lender for the APR and the total amount payable in writing.
We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.
Example (for illustration only): a company buys a machine costing €50,000 on hire purchase, pays a deposit of €5,000 and finances €45,000 over 4 years. If a lender’s offer showed a total repayable of €53,760 on the €45,000, the repayments would be 48 monthly payments of €1,120. After the last payment and the small purchase fee set out in the offer, the machine belongs to the company. The real cost depends on the lender’s offer, and finance is subject to status and lender approval.
The lender owns the asset until the final payment. If payments are missed, the lender can repossess it and your company may still owe a balance. Directors may be asked for a personal guarantee and should take independent legal advice before signing one. Tax and VAT treatment depends on your company's circumstances; check with your accountant.
Finance is subject to status and the lender’s approval. Welcome Finance is a commercial finance broker, not a lender. We arrange finance for limited companies for business purposes only; this is not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

How we work
Hire purchase finance: frequently asked questions
How does business hire purchase work?
The lender buys the asset and your company hires it for a fixed term, paying instalments. Once the last instalment and a small purchase fee are paid, ownership passes to your company. You use the asset from day one, and the lender can repossess it if payments are missed. Hire purchase suits companies that want to own long-life equipment or vehicles.
Who owns the asset on hire purchase?
The lender, until your company pays the final instalment and any option-to-purchase fee. Until then your company cannot sell the asset or use it as security for other borrowing without the lender's consent. After the last payment, ownership passes to your company. Check the purchase fee, and any final balloon payment, in the agreement before you sign.
Can I claim VAT on hire purchase?
Usually, yes, if your company is VAT-registered and the asset is for its taxable business. Revenue treats hire purchase as a supply of goods when the asset is handed over, so VAT on the full price is due at the start and can be reclaimed in your VAT return, except on most cars, where recovery is limited. The credit charges are exempt from VAT. Plan cash flow for the VAT until it is reclaimed.
Can I claim capital allowances on an asset bought on hire purchase?
Usually, yes. A company buying plant or machinery on hire purchase can generally claim wear and tear allowances at 12.5% a year over eight years once the asset is in use, while the interest element is treated as a business expense. Allowances on cars are restricted by emissions and cost. Confirm the treatment with your accountant.
What are hire purchase rates in Ireland?
There is no standard rate: each lender prices the deal on the asset, its age, the term, the deposit and your company's accounts. Assets that hold their value, such as vans and machinery, usually price better than specialised or older items. Many offers are quoted as a flat rate, so ask for the APR and the total amount repayable and compare like for like.
What is a balloon payment on hire purchase?
A larger final payment that lowers your monthly instalments during the term. Some lenders offer it on assets that hold their value, such as vans and machinery. It eases monthly cash flow but means more interest overall and a lump sum at the end, which your company must be ready to pay or refinance.
Can I get hire purchase on used equipment?
Yes, with many lenders, subject to the asset's age, condition and resale value. Lenders usually want the agreement to end while the asset still has value, so older equipment tends to get a shorter term or a larger deposit. Buying from a dealer with an invoice and service history is usually easier to finance than a private sale.
Can I settle a hire purchase agreement early?
Yes, you can usually ask the lender for a settlement figure and pay the agreement off early. Early-settlement charges can apply, especially on fixed-rate agreements, and you may save less interest than you expect. Ask for the settlement figure in writing and compare it with the remaining payments before deciding.
What happens if my company misses hire purchase payments?
Contact the lender straight away. Because the lender owns the asset until the end of the agreement, it can repossess it if payments are missed, and your company may still owe a balance after the asset is sold. Any director's guarantee can also be called on. Regulated lenders must follow set procedures for SMEs in arrears.
Does Welcome Finance arrange hire purchase?
Possibly. Equipment and vehicle dealers often have finance partners, and banks and asset finance companies offer hire purchase directly. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.
