What drives Sligo’s economy?
Healthcare and life sciences are central. AbbVie has a manufacturing plant in the town, and Sligo University Hospital is a major employer for the town and region. Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Sligo supplies engineering, science and business graduates, and Enterprise Ireland’s North West office is in Finisklin Business Park, alongside many of the town’s manufacturers.
Tourism is the other pillar. Surfing at Strandhill and Enniscrone, walking routes and festivals bring visitors along the Wild Atlantic Way, but income is concentrated in the warmer months. The CSO recorded only about 38,000 tonnes of goods through Sligo port in 2025, so most freight moves by road, keeping haulage and wholesale companies busy on the N4 and N17.
What funding is available only in the west?
The Western Development Commission’s loan fund lends to companies registered, headquartered and controlled in seven counties, including Sligo, Leitrim, Mayo and Donegal. Loans usually range from €50,000 to €300,000 over three to ten years at a commercial rate, and target sectors such as medtech, ICT, food, manufacturing and tourism.
Where do business loans in Sligo usually go?
Tourism and hospitality firms borrow for refurbishments before the season or to bridge the winter. Suppliers to the medtech plants fund staff and stock for new contracts, and lenders will look closely at how seasonal or contract-based your income is. Sligo County Council also offers a rates incentive for businesses opening in long-vacant premises and a discount for paying rates early, which can lower fixed costs before any borrowing. The vacant premises incentive runs over five years, from 100% down to 20%, for units empty for at least 12 months with annual rates of up to €30,000.

How we work
Business loans in Sligo: FAQs
Does the Western Development Commission’s loan fund lend to Sligo companies?
Yes. Sligo is one of the seven counties covered by the Western Development Commission’s loan fund. Your company must be registered, headquartered and controlled in the region, and more than half of its promoters and management must live there. Loans usually range from €50,000 to €300,000, repaid monthly by direct debit over three to ten years.
What is Sligo’s Commercial Rates Incentive Scheme?
Sligo County Council’s scheme, running since 1 January 2023 and reviewed annually, reduces rates for qualifying businesses opening in premises vacant for at least 12 months. The reduction runs over five years: 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and then 20%. Annual rates must be no more than €30,000, you need tax clearance, and some uses are excluded. Apply before you start trading.
Is there a discount for paying Sligo rates early?
Yes, for smaller ratepayers. Under Sligo County Council’s early payment incentive, businesses with annual rates under €10,000 and no arrears get 5% off if they pay 95% of the bill by 31 July, or 2.5% off if they pay 97.5% by 30 September. No application is needed, but you must be the occupier running a qualifying business.
Where is Enterprise Ireland’s office in Sligo?
Enterprise Ireland’s North West office is in Finisklin Business Park, Sligo, with a second north-west office at ATU Donegal in Letterkenny. It works with manufacturing and internationally traded services companies that export or plan to, including suppliers to Sligo’s medtech and pharmaceutical plants. Smaller companies usually start with LEO Sligo at City Hall, which can refer them on.
Can a Sligo tourism business borrow before the summer season?
Often, yes. A short-term working capital loan can fund stock, staff training or a refit before the season, and a merchant cash advance, repaid as a share of card takings, suits businesses with steady card sales. Both are products our panel can consider for trading limited companies. Lenders will want to see last season’s bank statements, so keep them to hand.
Who can meet LEO Sligo’s team?
Businesses in Co. Sligo employing fewer than ten people can arrange to meet Local Enterprise Office Sligo’s team at City Hall on Quay Street to discuss grants, training, mentoring and Microfinance Ireland loans. The LEO is also a single point of contact for information on other State supports for small businesses, so it is a useful first call even if you are not sure what you need.
