About grant and R&D tax credit funding

R&D tax credit funding and grant bridging finance are short-term advances that bring forward money your company expects from an approved grant or an R&D tax credit claim. Many Irish grants are paid after you have spent the money: Local Enterprise Office grants other than salary grants are reimbursed against vouched spending, and equipment must be paid for, installed and inspected first. LEO Kildare states plainly that you need bridging finance in place. Enterprise Ireland also pays grants after claims are reviewed.

The R&D tax credit is 35% of qualifying spend for accounting periods with a corporation tax return due on or after 23 September 2027 (generally periods ending on or after 31 December 2026; earlier periods stay at 30%). It is paid in three annual instalments: the first is the greater of €87,500 (or the full credit, if lower) and 50% of the credit, the second is three-fifths of the balance, and the third is the remainder. The Finance (No. 2) Bill 2026 proposes raising the €87,500 figure to €105,000; that is not yet law. Our R&D tax credit guide explains the rules, and our Local Enterprise Office grants guide covers LEO supports.

Types of grant and R&D tax credit funding

  • Grant bridging

An advance against an approved Enterprise Ireland, LEO or other grant.

  • R&D tax credit advance

An R&D tax credit loan against an expected or filed claim.

Typical eligibility

Every lender sets its own criteria. These are common starting points. We’ll tell you which lenders are likely to consider your business.

  • Irish limited company
  • A written grant approval or a well-prepared R&D tax credit claim
  • Tax affairs up to date; grants and many lenders require tax clearance

What you’ll usually need

  • Grant offer letter and claim schedule
  • R&D claim workings or adviser report
  • Latest accounts
  • Tax clearance certificate
Full document checklist

Advantages

  • Keeps projects moving without waiting
  • Repayment linked to an expected payment
  • Can bring forward later R&D instalments

Things to consider

  • Interest and fees reduce the net benefit
  • Grants exclude VAT, so plan for VAT separately
  • If the grant or credit is reduced, the advance is still owed

Rates, fees and costs

Costs depend on the lender, the amount and how long until the grant or credit is paid. Compare the total cost against the expected payment to see the net benefit. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.

We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.

Example (for illustration only): a company expects an R&D tax credit of €80,000 and borrows €60,000 against it until Revenue pays. If a lender’s offer showed a total cost of €3,000, the company would repay €63,000 from the credit when it arrives and keep the remaining €17,000. If the payment came later than expected, the cost could be higher. The real cost depends on the lender’s offer, and finance is subject to status and lender approval.

If the grant is reduced or withdrawn, or Revenue reduces the R&D claim, your company must still repay the advance. Any asset or guarantee given as security may be at risk if repayments are not kept up. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee. Make sure claims are prepared properly and take tax advice on R&D claims.

Finance is subject to status and the lender’s approval. Welcome Finance is a commercial finance broker, not a lender. We arrange finance for limited companies for business purposes only; this is not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

Grant and R&D tax credit funding: frequently asked questions

Can I borrow against an R&D tax credit claim?

Some specialist lenders offer R&D tax credit finance, advancing part of an expected or filed claim and taking repayment when Revenue pays. They look at the quality of the claim, your adviser’s report, your tax position and when each instalment is due. Rates and terms vary, and if Revenue reduces the claim, your company still owes the advance.

How do I fund a grant before it is paid?

Most grants are paid in arrears, so your company must fund the spending first. Options include cash reserves, a working capital loan, asset finance for equipment, or grant bridging finance from a specialist lender against the approved grant. Remember that grants exclude VAT, so plan for the VAT cash gap as well.

Are LEO grants paid upfront?

No. Local Enterprise Office grants, other than salary grants, are paid after the spending has been made and paid for and, for equipment, installed and inspected. Your company has to fund the full cost first, including VAT, which grants do not cover, and LEO asks for a current tax clearance certificate. LEO Kildare notes that you need bridging finance in place.

What is the R&D tax credit rate in 2026?

The rate rose to 35% for accounting periods with a corporation tax return due on or after 23 September 2027, which generally means periods ending on or after 31 December 2026; earlier periods stay at 30%. The credit is used against corporation tax, and any excess can be paid to the company in instalments. Claims must meet Revenue’s science or technology tests.

How is the R&D tax credit paid out?

In three annual instalments. The first is the greater of €87,500 (or the full credit, if lower) and 50% of the credit; the second is three-fifths of the remaining balance; the third is the rest. The Finance (No. 2) Bill 2026 proposes raising the €87,500 floor to €105,000, which is not yet law. This wait is why some companies bring the cash forward.

Can I get bridging for an Enterprise Ireland grant?

Some lenders will advance against an approved Enterprise Ireland grant, because the offer letter shows the amount and conditions. They look at milestones, claim timing and whether your company can meet the conditions. A grant application that has not been approved is rarely enough. Enterprise Ireland pays after it reviews each claim.

What if the grant or R&D claim is reduced?

Your company still owes the full advance and fees, even if the grant body pays less than expected or Revenue reduces the R&D claim after review. Grants can also be cut if their conditions are not met. Prepare claims carefully, keep records, take tax advice on R&D claims, and only borrow against amounts you are confident of receiving.

Does Welcome Finance arrange grant or R&D tax credit funding?

We do not apply for grants on your behalf: grants are applied for directly with Enterprise Ireland, your LEO or IDA Ireland. To fund the wait, a general working capital loan may sometimes help. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.

Can a start-up get grant bridging finance?

Possibly. Start-ups registered as limited companies in Ireland can apply. Most lenders look for some trading history, so options may be fewer for a new company. New businesses can also speak to their Local Enterprise Office, which runs grants and supports for start-ups, and to Enterprise Ireland if they are a high-potential start-up. Microfinance Ireland also lends to small businesses that find it hard to borrow elsewhere.
