About electric vehicle finance
Electric vehicle finance covers the ways a company can pay for electric vans, cars and charge points over time: hire purchase, finance lease, contract hire or a business loan. The vehicle choice and running costs matter as much as the finance. SEAI's grants for new battery electric vans pay up to €3,800 for small and medium vans and up to €7,600 for large panel vans, usually applied by the dealer. Grants are not paid on second-hand vehicles.
Tax can change the sums. In 2026, a battery electric car's original market value is reduced by €30,000 before BIK is worked out, and the rate on the rest is 15% to 6% depending on business mileage. Motor tax is €120 a year, and electric vehicles and charge points bought by a company can qualify for the Accelerated Capital Allowance, based on the lower of the cost or €24,000 per vehicle. Budget 2026 extended the ACA to 2030. Ask your accountant how these apply to your company.
Our panel may help with an unsecured business loan to pay for the equipment, which your company then owns from day one. The lender makes the decision and sets the rate; approval is never guaranteed. For leasing and hire purchase, see van finance, business car finance and green and energy-efficiency loans.

Finance lease or contract hire
Your company uses the vehicle for a set term and hands it back or settles a balance.
Typical eligibility
Every lender sets its own criteria. These are common starting points. We’ll tell you which lenders are likely to consider your business.
- Irish limited company buying for business use
- A dealer quote or order
- Bank statements showing affordability
- For our panel, usually 12 months trading and turnover over €100,000
What you’ll usually need
- Dealer quote or invoice
- Recent business bank statements
- Latest filed accounts
- Company and director details
Advantages
- Lower running costs than diesel for many fleets
- SEAI grants and tax reliefs reduce the real cost
- Spreads the cost over the vehicle's working life
Things to consider
- Higher upfront prices than diesel equivalents
- Resale values for used EVs can be uncertain
- Charging at premises may need extra spending
Rates, fees and costs
Costs depend on the vehicle, term, deposit and the company's credit profile. Compare the total cost in euro across a loan, HP and lease, after any SEAI grant and tax relief your accountant confirms. Check for documentation, early settlement and end-of-term fees.
We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.
Example (for illustration only): a company buys a new electric van costing €45,000. If the van qualified for an SEAI grant of €3,800, applied by the dealer, the company would finance €41,200 over 4 years. If a lender’s offer showed a total repayable of €46,560, the repayments would be 48 monthly payments of €970. The real cost depends on the lender’s offer, and finance is subject to status and lender approval.
With HP or a lease, the vehicle can be repossessed if payments are missed. With an unsecured business loan, the lender can pursue the company and any director's personal guarantee. If the vehicle is worth less than expected later, your company still owes the full amount.
Finance is subject to status and the lender’s approval. Welcome Finance is a commercial finance broker, not a lender. We arrange finance for limited companies for business purposes only; this is not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

How we work
Electric vehicle finance: frequently asked questions
Can my company get finance for electric vans?
Yes, through a business loan, hire purchase, finance lease or contract hire, subject to the lender's criteria. SEAI grants of up to €3,800, or €7,600 for large panel vans, can reduce the price of new battery electric vans.
Are there grants for electric vehicles for businesses?
SEAI offers grants for new battery electric vans, applied through the dealer, and the vehicle must be on its approved list. There is no grant for second-hand vehicles, and approved EVs priced under €15,000 get no grant. Check current amounts with SEAI before you order.
What is the BIK on an electric company car?
In 2026, a battery electric car's original market value is reduced by €30,000 before BIK is worked out, and the rate on the rest is 15% to 6% depending on business mileage. Plug-in hybrids do not qualify. Rules change in budgets, so confirm with your accountant before choosing a car.
Can my company claim the Accelerated Capital Allowance on an EV?
Possibly. SEAI says electric vehicles bought new and used in the trade can qualify, based on the lower of the cost or €24,000, and charge points are included. Budget 2026 extended the scheme to 2030. Equipment that is leased to you usually does not qualify, so ask your accountant.
Is a loan or a lease better for an EV?
It depends on whether your company wants to own the vehicle, how it treats tax and how long it will keep it. A loan gives ownership and may allow capital allowances. A lease or contract hire can reduce the risk of resale values. Compare total costs and ask your accountant.
Can I finance charge points too?
Yes. Many lenders will include charge points in a loan or lease alongside the vehicles. Charge points bought by a company can also fall within the ACA, according to SEAI. Get a quote that shows the vehicles and charging separately.
Does Welcome Finance offer EV leasing?
