About merchant cash advance

A merchant cash advance (MCA), sometimes called card terminal funding or a business cash advance, gives your company a lump sum that is repaid automatically from future card takings. When sales are high you repay faster; when they dip, repayments slow down.

In Ireland, card-sales funding starts at about €10,000. Linked Finance, one of our panel lenders, offers it from €10,000 to €150,000, repaid daily as a fixed percentage of card sales over a maximum of 12 months, to companies with turnover above €100,000. Some MCAs are structured as a purchase of future sales for a fixed fee; others, like Linked Finance’s, are loans priced with interest.

This page covers whether your company can get one and what you need. Our merchant cash advance guide explains factor rates and the true cost in detail, our MCA vs business loan guide compares the two, and the merchant cash advance calculator shows the total repayable for your own card sales.

The cost is fixed up front by the factor rate. Repayments rise and fall with your card takings, so quieter months mean smaller payments and a longer term. The equivalent APR assumes the advance is collected every business day, as merchant cash advances are; a faster repayment means a higher APR.

A share of each card payment is collected via your terminal provider.

Typical eligibility

Every lender sets its own criteria. These are common starting points. We’ll tell you which lenders are likely to consider your business.

  • Irish limited company taking card payments
  • Usually 6 to 9 months or more of trading
  • Minimum turnover set by each provider, such as €100,000 a year at Linked Finance
  • Personal guarantee often required

What you’ll usually need

  • 3 to 6 months of card statements
  • Business bank statements
  • Director ID and proof of address
Full document checklist

Advantages

  • Repayments flex with sales
  • Some providers decide within about 24 hours; not guaranteed
  • Total repayable known upfront

Things to consider

  • Can be dear compared with a term loan if repaid quickly
  • Repayment continues until the full amount is paid
  • Can strain cash flow if used repeatedly

Rates, fees and costs

Some MCAs charge a fixed fee, sometimes shown as a factor rate; others are loans priced with interest. Either way, ask for the total amount repayable in euro and an estimated repayment period based on your own card sales. Our merchant cash advance guide explains how factor rates work, and the merchant cash advance calculator turns an offer into a total cost.

We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.

Example (for illustration only): a company receives an advance of €30,000. If a provider’s offer showed a total repayable of €36,000, taken as 10% of each day’s card sales, and the company’s card sales were €50,000 a month, it would repay €5,000 a month and finish in about 7 months. If sales fell, repayments would slow down and take longer. The real cost depends on the provider’s offer, and finance is subject to status and the provider’s approval.

A merchant cash advance is repaid by automatic deductions from your card takings, usually daily or weekly, so less cash reaches your account every trading day until the full amount is repaid. You repay the full agreed amount whatever happens to sales, and the total cost can be higher than a loan, so compare the total repayable in euro. Personal guarantees are often required, and a director who signs one may have to pay if the company does not. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee. Some advances are not loans and may sit outside lending rules, so read the terms carefully and take advice if unsure.

Merchant cash advance: frequently asked questions

How does a merchant cash advance work?

The provider reviews several months of your card sales and offers a lump sum. Once you sign, a fixed percentage of each day’s card takings is collected, through your card terminal provider or by direct debit, until the agreed total is repaid. Busy weeks repay more and quiet weeks less, so there is no fixed monthly instalment.

Is a merchant cash advance a loan?

It depends on the provider. Some are structured as a purchase of your future card sales for a fixed fee rather than a loan, while others, such as Linked Finance’s merchant cash advance, are loans with interest repaid from card sales. The structure affects which rules apply, so read the agreement and take advice if unsure.

How much does a merchant cash advance cost?

It varies by provider and by how fast you repay. Ask for the total amount repayable in euro, not just a factor rate or percentage. Our merchant cash advance guide explains factor rates and why a quick repayment can mean a high annual cost, and our calculator works out the total for your own card sales.

Which merchant cash advance providers operate in Ireland?

Several specialist non-bank lenders offer card-sales funding to Irish companies. Linked Finance, one of our panel lenders, offers it from €10,000 to €150,000, and other providers work through card terminal companies. Our panel includes merchant cash advance providers, so we can tell you which may consider your company, but approval is never guaranteed.

Can a restaurant or pub get a merchant cash advance?

Yes, hospitality is one of the main users, because most takings come through card terminals and trade is seasonal. Providers look at several months of card statements and want steady takings. A restaurant cash advance is often used for refurbishment, equipment or stock before a busy season. Leave room for quiet months, since a share of every sale goes to repayment.

What do I need to apply for a merchant cash advance?

Usually three to six months of card statements, business bank statements, director ID and proof of address, and details of your card terminal provider. Lenders also check trading history and turnover: Linked Finance, for example, asks for annual turnover above €100,000. Sending everything together usually speeds up a decision.

Will an MCA provider ask for a personal guarantee?

Often, yes. Many providers ask a director to guarantee the company’s obligations, for example that it keeps taking card payments through the agreed terminal and does not divert sales. Read exactly what the guarantee covers, as it may differ from a loan guarantee, and take legal advice.

Can my company get an MCA with a poor credit history?

Possibly. Providers focus mainly on recent card sales, but they still check trading history, bank statements and, in many cases, the Central Credit Register, which gives no score, so the lender reads the report itself. Recent arrears, returned payments or Revenue debts make approval less likely and can raise the cost.

How quickly can I get a merchant cash advance?

Some providers say they can decide within about 24 hours of receiving card statements and documents, with funds following once the agreement is signed. Linked Finance, for example, says decisions typically come within one working day. This is not guaranteed, and the first application usually takes longest.

Can I repay a merchant cash advance early?

You can usually settle the remaining balance, but where the fee is fixed, early settlement often saves little unless the provider agrees a discount. Loan-based advances may cost less if repaid early. Ask for the early-settlement terms before you sign, and compare with a business loan using our MCA vs business loan guide.
