About green and energy-efficiency loans
Green business loans in Ireland fund projects that cut energy use or emissions, such as commercial solar panels, heat pumps, retrofits and electric vans. Bank of Ireland's Green Business Loan, for example, lends €1,000 to €1,000,000 over up to 7 years with a 0.30% margin discount, and asks for proof of the spend, such as an invoice or purchase order. The SBCI Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme adds a 0.25% discount for eligible green projects; you apply directly to a participating lender (see SBCI loans).
Grants can cut how much you borrow. SEAI raised its Non-Domestic Microgen grant for commercial solar PV to an effective 45% of eligible costs for applications from 6 October 2026, for nine months; check the current maximum on seai.ie. Do not start work until you have SEAI's letter of offer. Equipment on SEAI's Triple E register can qualify for the Accelerated Capital Allowance, a 100% first-year write-off, extended to 31 December 2030.
For solar panel finance, an EV fleet or retrofit finance, compare a green term loan with hire purchase or leasing. Our guide to funding energy upgrades covers grants, the ACA and green loans together.

Types of green and energy-efficiency loans
Green term loan
An energy efficiency loan for an approved project, usually with a rate discount.
Green asset finance
Hire purchase or leasing for solar, EVs and equipment.
SBCI GSLS loan
Government-backed, with an extra 0.25% discount for eligible green purposes. Apply directly to a participating lender.
Supplier-funded solar
Some energy suppliers pay for and install solar panels on your premises, then sell the power they produce to your business at a discounted rate. Pinergy, for example, offers funded solar on this basis. It is an energy supply contract, not a loan, so read the contract length, who owns and maintains the panels, and what happens if your company moves or sells the building.

Rates, fees and costs
Bank of Ireland's representative variable rates on its Green Business Loan are 6.72% up to €120,000, 5.27% from €120,000 to €500,000 (secured) and 4.92% from €500,000 to €1,000,000. Compare each offer's rate, fees and total repayable, and any grant or discount you may be able to use alongside it. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.
We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.
Example (for illustration only): a company borrows €80,000 over 5 years for solar panels and a heat pump. If a lender’s offer showed a total repayable of €96,000, the repayments would be 60 monthly payments of €1,600. Set the repayments against the expected energy savings, and any grant the project may get. The real cost depends on the lender’s offer, and finance is subject to status and lender approval.
Expected energy savings are not guaranteed. Base your decision on whether the company can afford the repayments even if savings are lower than forecast. Any asset or guarantee given as security may be at risk if repayments are not kept up. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee. Grants are decided by SEAI or the grant body, and tax relief depends on your company's position; check with your accountant.
Finance is subject to status and the lender’s approval. Welcome Finance is a commercial finance broker, not a lender. We arrange finance for limited companies for business purposes only; this is not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

How we work
Green and energy-efficiency loans: frequently asked questions
Are there green loans for businesses in Ireland?
Yes. The main Irish banks offer dedicated green business loans for solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, LED lighting and electric vans, usually with a small rate discount and proof of the green spend, such as supplier invoices. The SBCI Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme gives an extra discount for eligible green projects, and hire purchase and leasing can also fund green equipment.
How can my business finance solar panels?
Most companies combine an SEAI grant with a green term loan, hire purchase or leasing for the rest. Apply for the grant first and wait for the letter of offer before work starts, because the grant is paid after completion. Then fund your share: a loan suits companies that want to own the system outright, while leasing spreads the cost. Compare the total repayable.
How much is the SEAI solar grant for businesses?
SEAI's Non-Domestic Microgen grant supports commercial solar PV from 1 kWp to 1,000 kWp. SEAI raised the grant to an effective 45% of eligible costs for applications from 6 October 2026, for nine months; check the current maximum on seai.ie. Do not start work until you receive SEAI's letter of offer, which is valid for eight months.
Can I combine a green loan with an SEAI grant?
Generally, yes. The grant reduces the project cost, and a loan or asset finance can cover your company's share. Grants are usually paid after the work is completed and claimed, so you may need to fund the full cost first. Check the conditions on seai.ie, because starting work before you have the grant offer can make the project ineligible.
What is the Accelerated Capital Allowance?
A tax relief that lets a company deduct 100% of the cost of qualifying energy-efficient equipment from its taxable profits in the year it buys it, instead of over eight years. The equipment must be on SEAI's Triple E register, and the scheme has been extended to 31 December 2030. Your accountant can confirm whether your project and ownership structure qualify.
Do I need proof of what I'm buying for a green loan?
Yes. Green loans usually require supplier quotes, invoices or a purchase order showing the spend is for an eligible green purpose. Some lenders also ask for a BER certificate or an energy audit, before and sometimes after the work. Keep these documents, as they also help with grant claims and tax relief.
Is there a green discount on SBCI loans?
Yes. Under the Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme, eligible climate action and environmental sustainability projects get an additional interest rate discount. You apply for the scheme yourself: get an eligibility code from the SBCI, then apply directly to a participating lender. Our SBCI page sets out the discount and the routes to qualify.
What if the energy savings are lower than expected?
Your company still has to make the full repayments. Savings depend on usage, energy prices and how well the system performs, and they are not guaranteed. Base the decision on whether the company can afford the repayments even if savings fall short, and treat a supplier's payback estimate as a best case rather than a promise.
Can Welcome Finance apply for SEAI grants or green loans for us?
No. SEAI grants are applied for directly with SEAI or through approved installers. Banks offer green loans directly, and asset finance providers may also help. Tell us what your company needs and we'll tell you honestly whether our panel can help, or where to apply instead.
