About Revenue tax and VAT funding
A tax loan in Ireland is a short-term business loan used to pay a Revenue bill on time. Your company then repays the lender monthly, which keeps cash available for trading. Bank of Ireland's tax loan, for example, runs for a maximum of 11 months; other lenders set their own terms.
A corporation tax loan or VAT loan is an alternative to a Revenue phased payment arrangement (PPA). Revenue charges 8% a year on a PPA for corporation tax and 10% for VAT, employer taxes (PAYE) and RCT, requires a down payment, and limits standard arrangements to 36 months. Paying late without an arrangement costs 0.0219% a day on corporation tax and 0.0274% a day on VAT and PAYE. Our guide to phased payment arrangements vs tax funding compares the two in detail, and the tax and VAT funding calculator estimates repayments.
Tax-bill funding through a general business loan is one of the products our lender panel may be able to help with. A tax loan never reduces the tax your company owes; it only changes when you pay it.

Tax and VAT funding pays Revenue in full by the deadline and spreads the cost. Compare it with a Revenue phased payment arrangement, which charges interest at 8% (corporation tax) or 10% (VAT, PAYE, RCT) a year and needs Revenue’s agreement.

Typical eligibility
Every lender sets its own criteria. These are common starting points. We’ll tell you which lenders are likely to consider your business.
- Irish limited company, usually with at least 12 months of trading
- A clear tax liability with a due date
- Accounts showing the company can afford repayments
- Tax affairs otherwise in order
What you’ll usually need
- Tax computation or Revenue statement showing the amount due
- Latest accounts
- 6 months of business bank statements
- Director ID and proof of address
Advantages
- Pays Revenue on time and protects tax clearance
- Spreads the cost over months
- Keeps cash in the business for trading
Things to consider
- Interest and any fees add to the cost of the tax
- A Revenue phased payment arrangement may be cheaper
- Does not reduce the tax owed
Rates, fees and costs
Bank of Ireland's tax loan example rate was 7.02% variable (rates as at 14 September 2026), with no administration fee. Non-bank lenders set their own rates and fees. Set the total cost of any offer against Revenue's PPA interest of 8% or 10% a year, so you can choose the cheaper option. Tax funding never changes the amount of tax your company owes.
We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.
Example (for illustration only): a company borrows €60,000 over 10 months to pay a VAT bill on time. If a lender’s offer showed a total repayable of €62,500, the repayments would be 10 monthly payments of €6,250. Set that total against the interest on a Revenue phased payment arrangement before you choose. The real cost depends on the lender’s offer, and finance is subject to status and lender approval.
This is a loan, not tax advice. Speak to your accountant about your tax position, and compare the loan's total cost with a Revenue phased payment arrangement. If the company does not repay the lender, recovery action and calls on any director's guarantee may follow, so a director's own assets could be at risk. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee.
Finance is subject to status and the lender’s approval. Welcome Finance is a commercial finance broker, not a lender. We arrange finance for limited companies for business purposes only; this is not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

How we work
Revenue tax and VAT funding: frequently asked questions
Can I get a loan to pay Revenue in Ireland?
Yes. Some banks and non-bank lenders offer tax loans so a limited company can pay corporation tax, preliminary tax or VAT to Revenue on time and repay the lender monthly, usually within a year. Our panel may be able to help with tax-bill funding through a general business loan. The lender decides, based on affordability and your company's trading record.
Is a tax loan cheaper than a Revenue phased payment arrangement?
Not always. Revenue charges interest of 8% a year on phased payment arrangements for corporation tax, and 10% for VAT, employer taxes and RCT, and asks for a down payment. A tax loan may cost more or less once its fees are included. Compare the total cost of both options, and talk to your accountant before choosing.
How do I pay a large tax bill my company cannot afford?
Contact Revenue early rather than missing the deadline, because late payment interest runs daily from the due date. Your main options are a Revenue phased payment arrangement, which needs a down payment and charges 8% or 10% a year, or a tax loan that pays Revenue now. Ask your accountant to check the figure and compare the total cost of both.
What happens if my company pays Revenue late?
Revenue charges daily interest from the due date until the tax is paid: 0.0219% a day on corporation tax and 0.0274% a day on VAT. Unpaid tax can also lead to Revenue enforcement and can stop your company being treated as tax compliant, which matters to customers, grant bodies and lenders. If you cannot pay in full, contact Revenue early.
Can I fund preliminary tax with a loan?
Yes. Preliminary tax is one of the most common reasons companies use tax funding, because it falls due before the year's profits have all come in. Paying enough preliminary tax on time also helps avoid interest on any shortfall. Your accountant calculates the amount; the lender only funds the payment and does not change what your company owes.
Can a loan cover VAT, PAYE or RCT?
Some lenders will fund VAT and employer taxes as well as corporation tax, usually through a general business loan. Revenue's phased payment interest on VAT, employer taxes and RCT is 10% a year, so compare any loan offer against that. Tell us the tax type, amount and due date, and we will tell you honestly whether our panel can help.
How quickly can tax funding be arranged?
Some lenders say they can decide within a few days of a complete application, but this is not guaranteed. Start well before the Revenue deadline, have your tax computation or Revenue statement ready, and remember that a late payment starts building daily interest from the due date, not from when the loan arrives.
Does a tax loan reduce the tax my company owes?
No. Tax funding only changes when and how your company pays; the liability stays the same, and interest and fees add to the overall cost. If you think the tax figure is wrong, or the company genuinely cannot pay, speak to your accountant and Revenue first. Revenue publishes guidance on phased payment arrangements and tax payment difficulties.
Will a director's guarantee be needed for a tax loan?
Often, yes. Many lenders that fund corporation tax and VAT ask a director to guarantee the loan, because it is unsecured and short term. Read the guarantee terms carefully and take independent legal advice before signing. If the company then cannot repay, the lender may call on the guarantee.
