About unsecured business loans

Unsecured business loans in Ireland are lump sums lent to a limited company without a charge over property, vehicles or machinery. There is no collateral, so the lender relies on your company's trading record, bank statements and filed accounts and, in most cases, a personal guarantee from one or more directors.

How much can you borrow unsecured? It depends on turnover and affordability. Some Irish non-bank lenders lend up to €500,000 unsecured; Linked Finance, for example, lends €10,000 to €500,000 over 6 to 60 months, for companies with turnover over €100,000; the rate depends on the company's credit grade. The main banks lend smaller amounts online and larger amounts by full application. Under the SBCI Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme, loans up to €500,000 are also unsecured, but you apply directly to a participating lender; see SBCI loans.

Do unsecured business loans need a personal guarantee? With non-bank lenders, usually yes. For the detail, read our guides to personal guarantees for company loans, whether you can get a business loan without a personal guarantee, and how secured and unsecured business loans compare.

Unsecured term loans are one of the products our lender panel may be able to help with. The lender makes the decision and sets the rate; approval is never guaranteed.

Types of unsecured business loans

  • Fixed-rate term loan

The rate and repayments stay the same for the whole term, which makes budgeting simple.

  • Variable-rate term loan

The rate can move with the lender's base rate, so repayments can rise or fall.

  • Short-term unsecured loan

Repaid within 12 months for a specific, temporary need. See short-term business loans.

  • SBCI-backed loan

Unsecured up to €500,000, generally with no personal guarantee, under the Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme. You apply directly to a participating lender, not through us.

  • Online platform loan

Some unsecured business loans come from online lending platforms rather than banks. For your company it works like any term loan, with fixed repayments. Linked Finance, one of our panel lenders, says it was authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland in late 2023 and offers unsecured loans of €10,000 to €500,000 over 6 to 60 months.

Typical eligibility

Every lender sets its own criteria. These are common starting points. We’ll tell you which lenders are likely to consider your business.

  • Irish limited company (LTD, DAC, PLC or ULC) registered with the CRO
  • Trading history: many non-bank lenders ask for 2 years and filed accounts
  • Turnover through a business bank account; some lenders set a minimum, such as €100,000 a year
  • A current tax clearance certificate, which many lenders require
  • Directors resident in Ireland, for many lenders

What you’ll usually need

  • Latest accounts filed with the CRO, plus recent management accounts
  • 6 months of business bank statements
  • Tax clearance certificate (from ROS)
  • Photo ID and proof of address for each director
  • Details of existing borrowing and beneficial owners
Full document checklist

Advantages

  • No property or equipment pledged as security
  • Fixed repayments make cash flow easier to plan
  • Decisions can be quicker than secured lending

Things to consider

  • Rates are usually higher than secured lending
  • A director's guarantee can put personal assets at risk
  • The amount is limited by turnover and affordability

Rates, fees and costs

Unsecured business loan rates in Ireland depend on the lender, amount, term and your company's trading and repayment record, and are usually higher than secured lending. As a benchmark, the Central Bank's average rate on new bank loans to SMEs was 5.59% in Q2 2026; non-bank unsecured loans typically cost more. Some lenders add an arrangement fee or an early-repayment charge. Where a lender makes an offer, you see the rate, the total amount repayable and all fees before you decide. Our business loan calculator and APR calculator help you compare.

We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.

Example (for illustration only): a company borrows €50,000 over 3 years. If a lender’s offer showed a total repayable of €62,000, the repayments would be 36 monthly payments of about €1,722. The real cost depends on the lender’s offer, and finance is subject to status and lender approval.

If your company does not keep up repayments, the lender can take recovery action and this can affect the company's credit record on the Central Credit Register. If a director has given a personal guarantee, the lender can ask that director to repay, and personal assets could be at risk. Take independent legal advice before signing a guarantee.

Finance is subject to status and the lender’s approval. Welcome Finance is a commercial finance broker, not a lender. We arrange finance for limited companies for business purposes only; this is not regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.

Unsecured business loans: frequently asked questions

What is an unsecured business loan?

A lump sum lent to your company without a charge over property, vehicles or equipment. Your company repays it in fixed instalments, usually monthly, over an agreed term. Because there is no asset behind the loan, the lender relies on trading history, bank statements, filed accounts and, usually, a director's guarantee. Rates tend to be higher than secured lending to reflect that risk.

Can I get a business loan without security in Ireland?

Yes, if your company trades steadily and can show it can afford the repayments. Non-bank lenders and the banks offer unsecured loans to limited companies with no charge over property or equipment. In place of collateral, lenders rely on bank statements, filed accounts, tax compliance and, usually, a director's guarantee. Expect a higher rate than secured lending and an amount limited by turnover.

How much can my company borrow without security?

Lenders work from affordability: your turnover, profit and the repayments the company can carry, based on its bank statements. Some non-bank lenders lend up to €500,000 unsecured, but many cap the loan at a share of annual turnover and take existing debts into account. Borrowing more than the purpose needs raises the cost and the risk, so start with a clear figure and what it will be spent on.

Do unsecured business loans need a personal guarantee?

Usually, with non-bank lenders. With no asset to fall back on, most ask one or more directors to guarantee the loan, and terms vary: some guarantees cover the full balance plus costs, others are capped. Government-backed SBCI loans up to €500,000 generally have no personal guarantee. Read any guarantee as carefully as the loan agreement and take independent legal advice before signing.

How long must my company trade before getting an unsecured loan?

It depends on the lender. Many non-bank term lenders want around two years of trading and accounts filed with the CRO, while some will consider about 12 months if bank statements show steady income. Start-ups registered as limited companies in Ireland can apply through Welcome Finance, although options may be fewer. The Local Enterprise Office and Microfinance Ireland are other places to look.

How quickly can I get an unsecured business loan?

Some lenders say they can make a credit decision within 24 hours of a complete application, with funds following once the agreement is signed and checks are done. This is not guaranteed. Most delays come from missing paperwork, so have your accounts, six months of business bank statements and director ID ready before you apply.

Can I repay an unsecured business loan early?

Often, yes. Some lenders let you settle early and save the remaining interest; others charge an early-repayment fee or calculate the settlement figure so that you save less than you might expect. Check the early-settlement terms in the loan agreement before you sign, and ask the lender for a written settlement figure before you repay.

What happens if my company can't repay the loan?

Contact the lender as soon as you see a problem. Missed payments can lead to default interest, recovery action and, if a director signed a guarantee, a demand on that director, and lenders that report to the Central Credit Register will record the arrears. Regulated lenders must follow the Central Bank's SME Lending Regulations for borrowers in arrears. Your accountant can advise on options such as SCARP or examinership.

Will applying for a loan show on the Central Credit Register?

It can. The Central Credit Register does not give a credit score. Lenders that search the Central Credit Register leave a record of the enquiry on your company's report, and lenders must check the register for applications of €2,000 or more. Loans of €500 or more are reported, though not every non-bank lender reports to the register. Applying to many lenders at once leaves a trail of enquiries.

Is an unsecured loan cheaper than a merchant cash advance?

Often, if your company qualifies. A term loan charges interest on a reducing balance over a longer term, while a merchant cash advance usually charges a fixed fee repaid quickly from card sales, which can equal a high annual cost. Compare the total amount repayable and the expected repayment period, not the headline rate or fee.

What is an online platform business loan?

It is a business loan arranged through an online lending platform rather than a bank branch. Your company borrows and repays as it would with any term loan, with fixed repayments, and the lender checks the company in the usual way. Linked Finance, one of our panel lenders, is an Irish platform of this kind.
