Local insight

How Kilkenny companies use invoice finance

Invoice finance, also called invoice financing, debtor finance or receivables finance, gives your company an advance against invoices it has issued to other businesses. Irish providers publish advance rates of up to 85% to 90% of approved invoices: Bank of Ireland states up to 85%, while AIB Commercial Finance and Bibby Financial Services Ireland state up to 90%. The balance, less fees, follows when your customer pays. In Kilkenny, limited companies in sectors such as agri-food and dairy, financial services, and tourism and hospitality use invoice finance for a range of needs. There is no Welcome Finance office in Kilkenny, so we work with Kilkenny companies by phone and online instead. It is an established market. BPFI figures for Q1 2026 show over €1.3 billion advanced to Irish businesses, more than €3 billion available and an average of almost €1 million advanced per client. Manufacturing, agriculture, transport and logistics, services and recruitment are the main users. Construction invoice finance is possible, but applications for payment, retentions and disputes make construction ledgers harder to fund, so ask providers directly.

The process

How it works

  1. 01

    Provider reviews your ledger

It checks your customers, aged debt report and terms, then sets an advance rate and limit.

  2. 02

    You invoice as normal

Invoices are assigned to the provider, often through an online platform.

  3. 03

    Advance paid

Once set up, some providers say they fund within 24 hours of an invoice; this is not guaranteed.

  4. 04

    Customer pays, balance released

When the customer settles, the provider releases the balance less its fees.

What it costs, and what to watch

Invoice finance rates are usually made up of two charges. The discount charge works like interest on the money you draw and is set as a margin over the provider's base or prime rate. The service fee pays for running the facility and is often a fixed annual fee charged monthly. Factoring services cost extra. Ask each provider for both charges, and the expected annual cost for your ledger, in writing.

We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.

Risk warning

Most facilities are with recourse: if a customer does not pay, your company usually has to repay the advance. Providers usually take a charge over company assets, registered with the CRO, and may ask for director guarantees or indemnities, so those assets and guarantees may be at risk if the company cannot repay what it owes. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee. Service fees and discount charges add to the cost, so compare the total cost of the facility, not just the advance rate. AIB and Bank of Ireland state that invoice finance does not require Central Bank of Ireland authorisation, so Central Bank consumer protection rules and compensation schemes do not cover it.

Invoice finance in Kilkenny: questions

Which local supports in Kilkenny can sit alongside invoice finance?

Start with Local Enterprise Office Kilkenny, part of the county council at County Hall on John Street, for grants, mentoring and a Microfinance Ireland referral at 1% off the rate. If you are opening in a long-vacant unit with rates under €5,000, the council’s vacant premises scheme can rebate up to €7,500 over three years.

How does invoice finance work in Ireland?

Your company invoices its business customers as usual and assigns the invoices to a provider, which advances an agreed share of their value. When your customer pays, the provider releases the balance minus its fees. Before that, the provider reviews your customers and sales ledger to set a limit. Some providers say they can fund within 24 hours of an invoice once set up, though this is not guaranteed.

How much does invoice finance cost?

There are usually two charges: a discount charge on the money you draw, set as a margin over the provider's base or prime rate, and a service fee for running the facility, often a fixed annual amount charged monthly. Factoring, audits and bank transfers can add to the cost. Ask each provider for the expected annual cost based on your own turnover and customers.

Is invoice finance a loan?

Not in the usual sense. The provider advances money against invoices that are assigned or sold to it, rather than lending a fixed sum repaid in instalments. Your available funding moves with your sales ledger. In practice it behaves like a revolving facility, and with recourse your company must repay advances on invoices that are never paid, so treat it as a debt.

Which invoice finance companies operate in Ireland?

The main banks offer it through specialist arms: AIB Commercial Finance and Bank of Ireland Invoice Finance offer invoice discounting, and PTSB refers business customers to Bibby Financial Services Ireland, which offers factoring, discounting and recruitment finance. Independent providers also operate. Compare advance rates, both fees, the minimum term and notice period, and any minimum ledger size.

How much can my company get from invoice finance?

It depends on your approved debts. Bank of Ireland gives this example: €1,000,000 of debtors, less €100,000 of disapproved debts, leaves €900,000 approved; at an 85% advance, €765,000 is available. Old, disputed and intercompany invoices are usually excluded, and a provider may cap how much one customer can make up. The amount rises as your sales ledger grows.

Which invoices qualify for invoice finance?

Invoices to other businesses for goods delivered or work completed in full, usually under 90 days old, with a clear paper trail. Providers normally exclude disputed invoices, intercompany debts, contra debts where you also buy from the customer, cash sales and invoices to consumers. They also look at how creditworthy your customers are before approving them.
