Local insight

How Waterford companies use working capital finance

Working capital finance in Ireland covers the gap between paying out for staff, stock and overheads and getting paid by customers. Working capital is the money a company needs to run day to day; a working capital loan bridges a timing gap rather than funding long-term projects. In Waterford, limited companies in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and life sciences, bioprocessing and medical devices, and software and technology use working capital finance for a range of needs. Welcome Finance does not have a Waterford office; we deal with Waterford companies by phone, email and online. It comes in several forms: short-term working capital loans repaid monthly, bank credit lines, revenue-based funding repaid as a share of daily card or online sales, and invoice finance. The right one depends on how your company earns its income. For the wider picture, see cash flow finance; to estimate how much working capital your company needs, try our working capital calculator. For funding wages specifically, see payroll finance.

Working capital finance for Waterford companies

Who it suits

  • Companies with seasonal peaks, such as hospitality, retail and agri-food
  • Companies waiting 30 to 90 days for customer payments
  • Growing companies taking on larger orders
  • Businesses covering a temporary dip in cash flow

Common uses

  • Paying wages and suppliers on time
  • Buying stock or raw materials
  • Seasonal working capital before a busy period or through a quiet one
  • Taking on a large contract before it pays

What lenders usually look for

Typical eligibility

  • Irish limited company registered with the CRO
  • Trading history: some sales-based providers consider a few months of steady takings; loan providers more often want 12 months or more
  • Consistent income through a business bank account or card terminal
  • A tax clearance certificate for many lenders

Documents to have ready

  • 6 months of business bank statements
  • Latest accounts or management accounts
  • Director ID and proof of address
  • Aged debtors list, if you invoice customers
  • Card or online sales statements, for revenue-based funding

What it costs, and what to watch

Costs vary by product. Loans charge interest, sometimes with an arrangement fee; revenue-based funding usually charges a fixed fee repaid through your sales. A fixed fee repaid over a few months can equal a high annual rate, so compare every offer on the total amount repayable and the expected repayment period. Our rate converter and factor rate calculator help.

We are paid commission by the lender when finance completes. We do not charge your company a fee and never ask for payment upfront.

Risk warning

Working capital finance should support a temporary gap, not ongoing losses. If the company cannot repay, the lender may take recovery action and call on any director's guarantee. Any asset or guarantee given as security may be at risk if repayments are not kept up. Directors should take independent legal advice before signing a personal guarantee. Borrow only what the company can repay from expected income.

Working capital finance in Waterford: questions

Can a Waterford company cut its premises costs before applying for working capital finance?

If you are moving into a vacant unit, check Waterford City and County Council’s Economic Incentive Scheme first: up to three years’ rates relief, capped at €5,000 a year, plus a €6,000 start-up grant over three years. LEO Waterford, with offices in the city and Dungarvan, can also advise on grants and mentoring.

What is working capital finance?

Funding that covers your company's day-to-day running costs, such as wages, rent, stock and supplier bills, while it waits for customers to pay. It is meant for timing gaps, not long-term projects. It can be a short-term loan repaid monthly, a facility you draw on, or funding repaid as a share of sales, depending on how your company earns its income.

What is the best way to finance working capital?

It depends on how your company gets paid. Companies selling to other businesses on credit often suit invoice finance; card-heavy businesses may suit revenue-based funding repaid from sales; a one-off gap often suits a short working capital loan with fixed repayments. Match the term to the gap, and compare options on the total amount repayable rather than the headline rate or fee.

How is working capital finance different from a bank overdraft?

An overdraft is a limit on your business current account, usually reviewed every year and repayable on demand. Working capital finance is often a separate loan with a fixed term and repayment schedule, or funding repaid from daily sales, and it frequently comes from a non-bank lender. A fixed term gives certainty; an overdraft gives flexibility but can be reduced or withdrawn at review.

How much working capital does my business need, and how much can it borrow?

Start with the gap: how much you pay out for wages, stock and bills before customers pay, at your busiest point. Our working capital calculator helps you estimate it. Lenders then size funding against turnover, how regular your income is and existing repayments, based on your bank statements. Sales-based funding is usually sized against monthly card or online takings.

How fast can I get working capital?

Some providers say they can give a decision within 24 hours of a complete application, especially for sales-based funding where they read live card or bank data. Loans usually take longer because of document and identity checks. None of this is guaranteed, so apply before the gap becomes urgent: a rushed application usually costs more and has fewer options.

Can a newly trading company get working capital finance?

Yes, it can apply. Start-ups registered as limited companies in Ireland can apply. Most lenders look for some trading history, so options may be fewer for a new company. Some sales-based providers consider companies with a few months of steady card or online sales, while loan providers usually want 12 months or more. The Local Enterprise Office and Microfinance Ireland, which lends €2,000 to €50,000, are other places to look.
